Ajou University is one of the leading research-intensive universities in Korea. The history of Ajou goes back to 1971 when Korea and France entered into an agreement for the establishment of the Korea-France technology college with the aim of exchanging technology and culture through education. Based on the agreement, Ajou Engineering College, the forerunner of Ajou University, was founded in 1973. In 1981, the college became a comprehensive university and was renamed as Ajou University. Within several decades after its establishment, the university has grown into one of the top comprehensive universities in Korea through its innovative education and research outcomes.
Today, Ajou University is widely acknowledged as a Top 10 comprehensive university in the nation. It has ten colleges and schools: Engineering, Information Technology, Natural Sciences, Business, Humanities, Social Sciences, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, and University College. There are about 14,000 students with one third of them studying at graduate programs. The strength of the academic programs and research lies in both cutting-edge fields and traditional disciplines such as engineering, medical sciences, information technology, biohealth, smart mobility, energy, robotics, AI, new materials, etc. Ajou is also recognized for its international programs and strong support for international students. It has collaborative partnership with over 300 universities in about 60 countries and welcomes about 800 international students a year through its student exchanges, degree programs, language courses, summer school, etc.
Ajou University is located in the city of Suwon, the home of Samsung Electronics. Suwon is the capital city of Gyeonggi Province, Korea’s largest province that encompasses Seoul, and known as a major industrial and cultural center of the nation.
